The Indian Beggar

Essay No. 01

Beggars are everywhere. They can be seen in India too. They can be seen sitting on the roadsides, outside temples, busy places begging for alms. Some beggars go begging from houses, railway stations, and door to door. They are often seen at bus stands, cinema halls, and railway stations.

Usually, they wear rags. Some of them wear bandages soaked in blood. They cry and make the most pitiable voices. Their appeals often touch people’s hearts. They pray loudly for the health and prosperity of women’s children in order to get money. They ask people to give them something in the name of charity. They narrate tales of their sorrows and misfortunes. People feel sorry for their ill luck and give them alms. They make such pitiable actions that people often fall in their trap and give them something as alms. At religious places, they pray for the welfare of people’s life and family. At festivals, they earn a lot.

The life of a beggar is full of misery. He leads a life of poverty. He has no place in his own life. He spends nights in the verandahs of marketplaces, on roadsides, or under bridges. Usually, a beggar carries a traditional begging bowl and a crooked stick. Sometimes children trouble him. But among beggars, some are able-bodied persons. They beg because no hard work or skill is needed in it. They become social parasites. If they get a chance they steal valuable articles from houses or shops. Beggary is illegal. Often policemen harass beggars. Sometimes beggars play tricks on people. They limp or twist their hands as if they were really handicapped. These tricks are applied by them to excite pity in people’s hearts for them. Anyway, we should not encourage beggary. It is slur on the good name of our country. Able-bodied beggars should be given work to earn an honorable living. They shouldn’t shrink work.
