Kishore Kumar with Mukesh and Mohammad Rail formed the trio of top playback singers in the Bombay-based Indian film Industry. He was more popular amongst the young people because of his carefree and gay style of singing. He sang thousands of merry numbers and his “yodelling” was a craze amongst the younger generation, as it created a cheerful ‘mood’ and compelled listeners to tap their feet to the rhythms like the tunes of the English singer Elvis Presley.

Kishore’s real name was Abhas Kumar Gangtily. He was born at Khandwa (MP) on August 4, 1929. After his upbringing at Khandwa and Indore, he moved to Bombay where his elder brother Ashok Kumar was a popular film hero. Kishore worked hard to establish himself as a singer, actor, producer, director and music director. As a matter of fact he ventured over all such things. Music director Khemchand Prakash gave him a chance to sing in the film Ziddi. Hissong Marne ki duyaen kyon man, u gave him instant popularity. He had lent his voice to top actors like Dev Arland, Rajcsh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Some of his songs became memorable.

Kishore married four times. His wives were Ruma Devi, Madhubala, Yogita Bali and Leena Chandravarkar. His sudden death on October 13, 1987 stunned the country and his admirers. Kishore acted in some 81 films, the prominent amongst them Bhai-Bhai (1956), Asha (1957), Musafir (1957), Chalti ka naam Gaadi (1958), Door Gagan ki Chalon mein (1964) and Padosan (1968). He also acted in Bengali films. Amongst his memorable songs,  mention can be made of Ek Ladki Bhigi Bhagi si, Koi Iowa de mere beetey hue di, Yeh dil na hota bechara, Koi humdum na raha, Mere sapno ke rani, Yeh sham mastani, Jindagi ka safar, Tere mere milan ki rain and Main shayar badnam.
