Goswami Tulsidas is the leading poet of the Bhakti movement. He was a great reformer of Hindu Society. Tulsidas was born in an age when Hindu society was losing its religious and cultural sanctity and felt disillusioned in the wake of foreign invasions. He showed them the path and presented before them true and noble ideals to be followed in life. Tulsidas’s Ramcharitamanas is the greatest work in Hindi literature and is as sacred for the Hindus as the Bible is for the Christians. Tulsidas was a poet of the common people and wrote in their popular language ‘ Hindi’ . For the Hindus, Tulsidas is a symbol of religion, culture and true knowledge. Besides the religious importance, the poetic creations of Tulsidas are marked for their literary excellence. Some other important poetic works of Tulsidas in addition to the Ramcharitamanas are: Bairavi Ramayana, Parvati Mangal, Gitavali, Vinaypatrika and Ha-numan Chalisa.
‘Loknayak’ Tulsidas’s exact birth place is not known but it is believed that he was born in Rajpura (U.P.). He was taken into care by Swami Narharidas of Kashi who brought him up. In his childhood, he was taught Vedas, Puranas and Upanishads. Tulsidas was married to Ratnavali. It is said that he was deeply attached to his wife who once exhorted him to develop the same deep attachment to Lord Rama. Tulsidas then renounced worldly life and became, a devotee of Lord Rama making pilgrimages most of his life.
Tulsidas felt the need of certain norms to be adopted in life. That is why in Ramcharitamanas, he presents ideal characters before society— Maryada Puroshottam Rama as the ideal son; Lakshman as the ideal brother, Sita as the ideal wife and Hanuman as the ideal follower.
