Sergey Bubka
Russia: Unexcelled pole-vault record holder
Born : 1963
If there is any athlete who left the audiences completely mesmerised by his astonishing performances, it is Sergey Bubka of Russia. He is a pole-vaulter par excellence, who has broken his own records at least 25 times. His performance in every competition leaves the audience only with an impression, and i.e., he may reach a height that could be difficult„ if not impossible, for future pole-vaulters. He is the first pole-vaulter to stretch beyond some six metres.
Born in the Soviet Union on December 4, 1963, Sergey Bubka’s present record is 6.12 metres. He has been giving incredible performances in pole-vault in international contests. During the last five years, he has continuously improved his performance and jumped onto greater heights. You must be remembering that America boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980 thereby initiating political interference in sports. Many talented athletes consequently were deprived of the opportunities to display their talent. Bubka is one among such athletes. But, when he was privileged, he has been creating new records since 1984.
Amongst his excellent performances, mention may be made of `Friendship Games’ (Moscow, 1986), ‘International Indoor Athletics’ (New York, 1987) and ‘World Athletics Championship’ (Rome, 1987), where he won the gold medal. He added another gold medal to his kitty at ‘World Athletics’ (Helsinki, 1983). He won the European Cup in 1985-86. He remained supreme in the games at Canberra and Seoul Olympics in 1988. He is undefeated for the past six years and may remain so in the years ahead.
