Newbold Sebastian Coe was born on September 29, 1956 at, London. He was trained by his hard taskmaster father Peter Coe. Sebastian. became a champion long and middle distance runner and was counted as the world’s best in his time. He established many world records to his credit. His races with his own compatriot Steve Ovett were eagerly looked forward. Steve Ovett-Sebastian Coe and Mary Decker-Zola Budd (women) were the most talked about names in the track events during the eighties.
Coe used to take part in 800 metre events in the beginning. Later, he concentrated on 1500 metre events. He ran 800 metres in 1 min. 73 seconds and 1000 metres in 2 min. 12.18 seconds. His timing in 1500 metres was also a record. Coe won silver medal in 800 metres and gold medal in 1500 metres in Moscow Olympics (1980). He won the silver medal in 800 metres and a gold in 1500 metres at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. He was the first athlete to win gold medals in 1500 metre events in the two successive Olympics.
He was not included in the British team in the Seoul Olympics (1988) due to illness, despite his request. The president of International Olympic Committee, Sir Juan Antonio Samaranch, however, asked him to witness the events as a special invitee. Indeed, it was an acknowledgement of his extraordinary talents in the international track arena.
