Mirza Ghalib wrote fine Urdu poetry and is regarded as one of the greatest Urdu poets. He was also a pioneer in modem Urdu prose and provided strong base to the Urdu literature. As one of the most prominent poets in Urdu and Persian, Ghalib’s fame spread far and wide, and he enjoyed great popularity in Arabian countries. Ghalib’s poetry is distinguished by its intense feelings, wistfulness and a strong romantic mood which produce a charming effect on readers. Diwan-i-Ghalib, in 10 volumes is the collection of the obstetrical works of Ghalib. It has been translated into several Indian and foreign languages.
Mirza Asadullah Begh Khan Ghalib was born in Agra (U.P.) in a prosperous Muslim family. Later, he settled permanently in Delhi. After preliminary education in Urdu and Persian, Ghalib became a poet. When he was 13, he was married to Umro Beghum. Ghalib lived a luxurious and extravagant life which put him into heavy debt. The last days of Ghalib were spent in great financial hardships and wants. Ghalib died in 1869- aged 72.
As a writer and poet, Ghalib believed in using simple words. He laid the foundation of Urdu prose and that is why he is called the father of the modem Urdu prose. Urdu-i-Hindi and Urdu-i-Muallah are his two famous books of collection of letters. Some other notable prose works of Ghalib are: Naam-i-Ghalib, Lateif-i-Gaibi and Duupshe Kawaiyani. Ghalib’s writing mirrors the contemporary political, social and economic conditions of the country.
