Russia-born Stravinsky’s name occupies a foremost place amongst the great musicians of Europe. His creations were supposed to have ushered in the age of neo-classicism. Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky was born at Leningrad (Soviet Union) in the year 1882. His father was an opera singer. Stravinsky got interested in music from an early age. His talents were nourished and given shape by teachers like Rimsky and Gilyev. He was counted amongst the foremost musicians before the First World War. He was acclaimed in France and Russia for his ballet named `Firebird’. Stravinsky remained in France and Switzerland for consider-able time and travelled to many countries of Europe. During this period, he gave a lot of memorable creations. During 1938-’39, he lost his elder daughter, wife and mother.
He got an opportunity to go to America just before the Second World War. Harvard University invited him to lecture on the poetic content of music for two years. The second phase of his achievements started during this period. He was given the American citizenship in 1945. In 1948, he wrote The Rake’s Progress which was presented in Venice in 1951. This opera is considered immortal because of its music. Stravinsky’s 80th birthday was celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the world. He was also invited to his mother country, Russia, where his operas, chorus songs and ballets were highly acclaimed. He also met Khrushchev. Apart from The Firebird and The Rake’ s Progress, The Right of Spring and The Nightingale are his other immortal musical creations. As Stravinsky was a member of the orthodox church, he did not like the atmosphere in Russia. He liked the open society of America. France also granted him citizenship.
Stravinsky’s first marriage was with Catherine Nuseko (1906) and his second marriage with the well-known artist Vera de Boset.
