Homer
Greece: Classical Poet and Writer
Birth :—Death : 9th Century B.C.
Homer is a controversial poet both because of his life and works. But this in no way has affected the fame and greatness of his two classical poetical works Illiad and Odyssey. Both these literary masterpiece’s of Homer are a unique blend of poetry and tale and are based on the Greek-Trojan War which took place in the 13th century B.C. Illiad is the tale of a 10 year long Trojan War while Odyssey is a poetical narrative of ten years of wandering of a Greek Commander named Odysseus. For the composition of these two epics Homer collected facts about the legendary Trojan War, taking great pains. However, some believe that Iliad and Odyssey are not the creation of a single poet, but are an outcome of the combined efforts of several poets. Whatever the reality, both these works have been of an invaluable help to the modem world for the reason that these are the only sources that throw light on the life and times of the contemporary, 13th century, Greece
Now as far as the historicity of the life of Homer is concerned, the great historian Herodotus is convinced that there was a story-teller named Homer in Greece who lived in 9th century B.C. It is also believed that Homer was blind and used to tell tales of the ancient Greece and that it was on the basis of these tales that Iliad and Odyssey were composed in his name.
Iliad and Odyssey are now rank among the most precious treasures in world literature and they have inspired a number of poets down the ages. The name of Homer will always remain alive.
