Dr. Swaminathan is not only a famous scientist but also an able administrator and an efficient organisor of projects. He has served the country by holding many significant positions. His researches in the field of agriculture and his efforts for improving the quality of wheat in particular, have won him laurels. Dr Borlogue has highly appreciated his works.
Dr Swaminathan was born in Kumbakonam, a village in Tamil Nadu. His father, Dr M.S. Swaminathan was of nationalist fervour. Dr Swaminathan has spent a lifetime in the field of agriculture and food-production. He worked at home and abroad. For five years, he worked on a project on Paddy-production and returned home, to India, in 1988. He worked as the Director of Pusa Institute; Director General of Indian Agriculture Research Council; Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission. He is a well-wisher of the farmers and has always had their welfare in mind.
Dr Swaminathan, is an honorary member of 14 important International Scientific Societies/Councils including the Royal Society of London. Many Universities have conferred doctorate on him. In 1972, he was awarded “Padma Bhushan”. Dr Swaminathan believes in work, not in popularity and that is the reason he never came into so much limelight.
Dr. Swaminathan is the pride and glory of our country.
