The sudden demise of Bruce Lee on July 20, 1973 created a sensation throughout the world. It was nearly unbelievable that such a healthy and fit person expired so suddenly. At the time of his death, he was sitting with his girlfriend Betty Ting Pei and planning his new film. The Government of Hong Kong appointed an enquiry commission to go into the causes of his death. The newspapers were full of conjectures and contradictory surmises, but the world could never know the real reason of the death of this exponent of martial arts.

Bruce Lee was born on 27 November, 1940 in a Chinese family settled in America. His father, Lee Hoi, was an opera artist and his mother Grace was European. He was educated at Hong Kong. He made a deep study of the prevalent martial arts and formulated a new defence style. He married an American named Ling. With the release of his film Enter the Dragon, Lee became a highly paid actor in Hollywood. This film was a top box office attraction. Then came its second part Return of the Dragon. Bruce also starred in Game of Death and The Big Boss. Lee became a craze in the field of advertising and clothes, shoes and toilet goods carried his endorsement.

Bruce Lee took special training in Kung Fu, a form of martial art for defence. He studied the western wrestling and gave birth to a new defence system by mixing the salient points of these two systems. Lee was well versed in Judo, Karate and boxing. He became a craze with the young people and many became his enemy because of his competence and popularity. He trained many people in Kung Fu and his new system was known as Jean Kune Do.
