World T.B. Day – 24th March

T.B. is a disease that affects people in their most productive years. It is caused by a special type of bacteria which affect different organs alongwith bones in animals and human beings. But lung T.B. is most common in human beings. Celebrities such as Kamala Nehru and Srinivasan Ramanujan fell victims to this dreaded disease. Different symptoms of TB are cough for more than three weeks, persistent fever, blood in sputum, and loss of weight. It is a contagious disease and spreads from one person to another by contact through food or sneezing.

TB is best diagnosed by three sputum examinations under a microscope. It is curable, if at least three to four drugs are taken in the right combinations, right dosages and for the right duration. The minimum duration of treatment is six to eight months. It can best be treated by DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short Course) i.e. when the patient takes drugs in the presence of a trained health worker.

TB affects the economic development of a country. Human resource development in hampered and leads to poverty: It is a curable disease. So there is no need to be afraid of the disease. Instead a person under treatment can lead a normal life outside the hospital. No special diet is recommended. The only precaution is to treat the disease according to the advice of a consultant doctor. Hence:

“Stop TB to fight poverty, gain confidence, live at ease.”
