Pravasi Bhartiya Divas – 9th January

The first Pravasi Bhartiya Divas was celebrated on 9th January 2003. The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and FICCI jointly organised and celebrated this day to recognise the achievements and contributions of the Indian Diaspora (non-resident).

9th January is considered as Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, as on this very day, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India in 1915 at the age of 46 after a stay of around 20 years in South Africa. He was keen to serve his country and his people.

He gave India a powerful current of fresh air that made India to take a deep breath.

The conference on this day of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas gives an opportunity to meet more Indians who live abroad in many countries of the globe and he set up a network of people of Indian origin to share their feelings and possibilities. People of Indian origin (PIO) from over 46 countries sat down to celebrate the spirit of Indianness at the first Pravasi Bhartiya Divas. The occasion provided a platform to discuss important issues such as Dual Citizenship, etc. The overseas investment was made easier.

Thus non-resident Indians (NRI) could be utilized for all-round development of India by sharing their qualities and quantities. NRI’s would assist India through their field of excellence and in return, India will provide them security and feelings of oneness in times of crisis to them.
