Global Day of Action – 15th July
The Global Day of Action popularly known as ‘GDA’ is a day of awareness against waste burning. The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) has on the occasion of GDA called for a worldwide ban on burn technologies. This very day is marked by the global release of a report, “Waste Incineration: A Dying Technology.”
A release was issued citing waste burning of all kinds causes emission of several Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which poison our food chain. Citing a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, it is said that incinerators alone account for 69 percent of dioxin emissions worldwide.
Dioxins are endocrine disrupters, which impact the human reproductive systems among other things.
According to the release, waste incineration is a dying technology and waste treatment technology is unrediable and produces a secondary waste stream more dangerous than the original. It is a waste of resources and inefficient, as an energy production method. Thus worldwide, the incineration industry has proven to be unpopular and dangerous jobs. Third-world countries like India are witnessing a spread of this dirty technology due to ignorance and unawareness.
A survey done in September 2002 by Srishti for biomedical waste incineration revealed that installation of incinerators in Delhi are on a constant decline but open burning of waste is equally hazardous.
“Call for ban, on waste burning.”
