Central Excise Day – 24th Feb.

24th February is the Day when the foundation of the Central Excise Department was laid 58 years ago. This day serves to make us reflect on the tremendous contribution of the officers and staff of the Central Excise Department in collecting the largest quantum of the tax revenues of the Government of India. It is the occasion of the officers and staff of the Central Excise Department for the success of their endeavours to perform efficiently in the larger national interest. Central excise duties contribute around 35% of the total tax revenues of the exchequer. Central excise revenue is a critical component of Government planning and programme implementation including its schemes for development and social welfare.

It is the day to rededicate all officers and staff of the Central Excise Department to the task of providing quality service to the honest taxpayer. Tax on home products or for various licences, gives the revenue to the Government to execute various plans for anything that might be home-commodity, transport etc. So taxes are essential for the progress and prosperity of a country. But care should be taken while imposing taxes, so that lower and poor class society should not be tortured.
