Army Day – 15th January
Army Day is celebrated on the 15th of January. This is a very special day for the Indian Army as General K.M. Kariappa took over his charge of duties from the British General Sir Roy Bucher on January 15, 1949. General Kariappa held the office till January 14, 1953.
Indian Army has a glorious history. Indian Army also emerged out with flying colours during Kargil War in 2000. Nowadays, the Indian Army possesses many modern tanks and missiles. The Siachin glacier, the highest stationed army position in the world are that of the Indian Army in the Himalayas at 5,000 m height.
Indian Army honour its soldiers and army officers for their bravery. The country’s highest military honour is ‘Param Vir Chakra.’ This honour of Param Vir Chakra, for the first time, was given posthumously to Major Somnath Sharma in November 1947. He laid down his life while saving Srinagar city and airport from a Pakistani attack during the Kashmir Operations.
