It was built in the reign on King Suryavarman II at the beginning of the 12th century, though the construction had started in 802 when the Khmer kings ruled. Today this temple is the pride of Cambodia. It is also there on the country’s flag. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple was made as a royal temple. Then palace was built in between the temple and its North gate. It was from here that the king ran the court. In the 14th and the 15th century, the Buddhists took the temple under their control which is still continued. Today this temple is called the ‘City Temple’ and is waiting for some renovation. Today the 100 worn out carvings in the temple are witnesses of the temple’s glory of the past.
