New Year’s Day – 1st Jan

New Year’s Day is celebrated on Ist January throughout the world. The month of January is named after the ancient Roman God Janus. Celebration of the New Year’s Day is one of the oldest customs of mankind. It is believed that it was the Romans, who first started it. Some people say the Chinese were the first to start and still others claim that it was Germans, who began new year’s day celebration. The ancient Germans established the New Year festival on Ist January because of the changing season. Chinese on the other hand always had a great festival at the time of the New Year only as this was the time when they gathered the harvest and everybody came together for this happy occasion on New Year’s Day. They had a great holiday on this day to make merry and enjoy a period of rest from fieldwork. Anyhow in 1752 in Scotland, the calendar year had begun on Ist January. In modern times, this New Year’s Day celebration starts on the eve of 31st December. People eat delicious food in a festive mood. It appears all around that our environment has taken a new life. The New Year’s Day celebration ends up with the bursting of crackers, laughter, and dance at just after 12 p.m. at midnight. The next morning on Ist January, people greet and wish each other Happy New Year.
