A Career in Catering

There is a great demand for a career in catering these days. When a person completes a degree or diploma in Hotel Management or a similar course and obtains the necessary training, a job is almost a guarantee. The person can also start his own business on a small or large scale.

Apart from Indian dishes pertaining to several varieties mostly connected with certain states or regions, the national consciousness has arisen to demand numerous exotic varieties such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Italian, and Turkish food. Catering concerns the preparation of good food cooking and supplying it to persons and parties concerned in an organized fashion.

Like a traditional housewife job, it is a highly skilled job. It varies from catering to a few persons to hundred and even thousands of persons at functions, Marriage, and birthday parties. Catering is also provided in hospitals, railways, airlines, school and college canteens, apart from hotels and restaurants. It may involve packaging of cooked food articles for railway or airline passengers, home tiffins for school children and office-goers, and the like.

Catering is also concerned with baking, confectionery, chocolate making, etc. It may also include preparing beverages for cocktail parties and may extend to arranging and garnishing utensils and dishes, spreading tables, etc. for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or tea or cocktails parties. The cuisine is the hottest thing with tourists and travelers of all categories. Thus, catering professionals can join hotels, restaurants, fast-food joints, hospitals, pubs, canteens at industrial units, etc.

There are several institutions in our country that impart training in catering leading to a diploma or degree. Diplomas may vary from 6 months to 3 years in various courses like culinary arts, catering, Food Service, Food & Beverage Service, Cookery Craft, Bakery & Confectionery, Hotel Management, etc. The minimum required qualifications required are class X pass and plus two passes, depending on the kind of course. In this profession which requires hard physical work, foodservice and restaurant Managers and chefs are important figures whose responsibilities are tremendous. They have to hear in mind the dictum that the customer and guest are always right.

The career demands a genuine interest in the line and commitment , of a high level. An aspirant must have a pleasing personality. He should also have the ability for communication skills and resourcefulness. He must possess good health and stamina and the ability to work under pressure for long hours.
