Eligibility for Merchant Navy:Merchant Navy can be joined after 10th   as seafarer after qualifying pre sea courses or after 12th  as an officer  through various degree or diploma courses in mainly two specialized fields, Nautical (Deck) and  Marine engineering.

Age Limit: 17-25 Years

Medical Standards:

Candidates should be physically and mentally strong, fit for sea-services under standard norms

 

Eye-Sight :

6/6 without glasses, No color Blindness. (The candidate is subject to medical examination).

Courses to Join Merchant Navy ;  There are various courses to join after 10th or 12th in both private and govt training institute recognized and approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping. These are;-

  • Pre Sea Training In this course you will get proper training of maintenance of engine as well as deck. It is also known as G.P.R (General Purpose Training) you can join this course after 10th with minimum aggregate percentage of 40% with Mathematics, science and English as compulsory subject and should have 40% marks in each of them. The time duration of this course is 06 months and age limit is joining this course is 17 to 25 years.

Types of Ships:-

We  have  now  seen  different  type  of material  carried  through  water  way  and for which deferent   types  of   Ships  they  require accommodating   the  type   of  materials  as well  as passengers  and  therefore  there  are many  types of Ships you will find and they are as  follow:
BULK CARRIER Which  take  one  cargo  in  Bulk quantity, such as Sugar, Salt, Cement, Iron ore, Phosphorous, Stones etc… GENERAL CARGO: Which  carry  many  type  of material  at  a  time, i.e. Pipes,  Electrical  goods, Food, Steel Sheets etc…
CONTAINER CARRIER: Cargo  takes  in  the  container and  it is arranging port wise order to able to discharge without losing time factor. LIVE STOCK CARRIER: Which  carry  live  animals  and  accordingly  cages  are  on board the Ship
REFRIGERATED CARGO SHIP: This type of Ship carry vegetables, fruits, meat &   fish.  FISHING SHIP: This type of Ship  used for catching fish in high sea.
CAR CARRIER: Which carry nearly 2000 numbers of cars, trucks etc. Some time there is arrangement of taking passengers also. PASSENGER SHIP:  Which   carry   more   than  2000  passengers, they  provide  accommodation according  to  types  like  a  five  star  hotel, Swimming  pools, types  of   restaurant on the board the ship and many types of shops.
CRUDE CARRIER: Which carry  Crude  Oil  and for which tanks are having heating system so that Oil cannot get frozen. PRODUCT CARRIER: Which  carry  edible  as  well  as  petroleum product.
CHEMICAL CARRIER: This Ship carries different types of Chemicals in the tank. GAS CARRIER: This vessel carries different types of Gases.In addition to above there are following Ships which are used in Oil field are as follow:Oil Field – In India as well as overseas water lot of projects are coming up to extract gasses, oil etc. for which supporting Ships are used and they are known as:

1) Offshore Supply Ships,
2) Platform Support Ships,
3) Anchor Handling Ships,
4) Dynamic Position Ships,
5) Crane Ships,
6) Crew Boat,
7) Accommodation Ships,
8) Multi Purpose Ships.

Supply Ships: – Which carry  Water, Barites, Cement  and  Fuel Oil  in  the  tank. They  also  carry Platform/ Rigs required material on the deck. Platform  Support  Ships: –  Which  always   remain  near  the  platform  and   help   platform   to handover the goods.
Anchor Handling Ships:- In  mid  sea Platforms, Rigs, Drilling ships are remain fixed position due to the anchors which some time move due to heavy water waves so this type of  ship help them to bring back in the position. Dynamic Position Ships: These ships remaining in one position in mid sea and conducting job of welding, cable lying, pipe lying and under water survey.
Crane Ships: – Which assist  to leave  any  type of  material from Platforms/ Rigs/ Drilling Ship to Supply Ship or vice versa. Crew Boat: – Which  assist  project  personal, offshore field assistance to transport to around oil field area as well as shore.
 
Accommodation  Ships:- This  ship   used   for  Offshore   Project   work  where  more  than  100 personals  are  staying  like  a  five  star  hotel, there  will  be two to three workshop stations are kept, two heavy lifters are kept and also pipe lying stratures are kept.
