Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan

Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Badshah Khan) was born in 1890 in village Uttamonzai in Peshawar district. After finishing his education in 1911 at Aligarh, he returned to Peshawar. He established national schools at many places with the help of the Hazi of Turranzzai. The British Government sent him to jail for opening a national school in his own village.

His political career started with his participation in the agitation against the Rowlatt Bills. He attended the session of the Indian National Congress held at Nagpur in 1920. He organized the Khilafat Movement in his province (North West Frontier province). Being a popular leader, he came to be known as ‘Frontier Gandhi’. He personified the ideas and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi in the right spirit. He was the in most colourful disciple of Gandhi in non-violent activism, simplicity and courage of conviction. He not only practised Ahimsa but also enjoined it on his followers. He was a deeply religious ‘Prince of the Pathans. He hated religious bigotry or fanaticism. He was also known as Fakir-e-Afghan.

He was one of the stalwarts of India’s freedom struggle. He was Gandhi’s chief associate. He took an active part in Non-cooperation Movement and went to jail. He refused to accept the presidency of the Indian National Congress in 1934. He was a born soldier who had no lust for chair. The service of the country and especially of the Pakhtoons was the chief goal of his life. He organized a group and named it Khudai-Khidmatgar. He was a great leader of undivided India. He had a firm faith in the unity of the country. He was shocked to learn in 1947) that the Congress had accepted the proposal of the division of India.

He continued his struggle even after the formation of Pakistan. He kept fighting there also for the rights of the Pathans and went to jail and spent sixteen years there. He also led the life of an exile in Afghanistan for many years. He had a special attachment for India. The Indian Government and public had unflinching faith in him.

President V.V. Giri honoured him with the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding on November 15, 1969. He had also received the ‘Ahimsa Award’. He was awarded “Bharat Ratna’ on August 14, 1987. He was a king among men by stature and dignity of bearing. The born soldier died as a soldier after battling for life for six months. He breathed his last on January 20, 1988. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi paid homage to the departed leader at Peshawar. According to BBC London, Frontier Gandhi was the greatest man who ever struggled in Asia. May his soul rest in peace!
