Purim and Pesah
Purim is a Jewish festival and it is celebrated in the month of March. It is also called the ‘festival of lots’. During Purim, prayer, gifts, feast and giving alms are the main activities of Jews.
Jews celebrate this festival to rejoice the escape of the Jews from the stronghold of the Persian king. According to the mythology, the king of Persia was bent upon killing all the Jews. But the queen, risking her life, saved the lives of people. Since then the festival of Purim is celebrated in commemoration of providential deliverance of the Jews from the massacre.
Pesah or ‘Passover’ is another important festival of the Jews which comes a day after Purim. This festival commemorates the ‘passing over’ or sparing of Jews by the Angel of Death. It is believed that when Jewish families were about to leave Egypt, they were instructed by Moses to mark their doorway with blood. Jews visit synagogues and attend religious sermons on this day.
