A Drowning Tragedy

Rivers in India are flooded during the monsoons. They overflow their banks. Last year, during monsoons, we went to the Jamuna River for a bath. We went on our bicycles. A few of us took with us inflated rubber tubes and swimming kits. We took off our clothes, jumped into the water and began enjoying the refreshing bath. We kept near the bank in shallow water. A little farther the water was deep. There were many whirlpools in it. We splashed water at one another, dived and enjoyed the fun. The more courageous among us swam about, unmindful of the risk to their life.

We were busy enjoying ourselves, when all of sudden we heard the cries of a boy nearby. I looked about and saw Ravi drowning. He had gone out of his depth in the water and was being carried away by the strong current. He was ducking. He raised his arm and shouted for help. I hurriedly swam towards him, but by the time I reached there he was drowned. Luckily, I caught him by the arm and brought him out of the water. He was senseless. We laid him flat on the bank with his face downwards and gave him artificial respiration. Water gushed out of his mouth and nose. Soon he began to breathe and opened his eyes. He came to his senses.

We thanked God for his life and returned home happily.
