Teens and Drugs

The relationship between teens and drugs has been around for many decades. The teen years are probably the most turbulent years of one’s life. They are the most crucial years in the maturation process and during these years, the teenagers are faced with many challenges like discovering their identity outside home, their new sexual roles, independence, coping with authority and the most important of all, figuring out their goal in life. Add to that peer pressure and this pressure cooker is waiting to explode.

Peer pressure is cited as the number one reason that teenagers turn to drugs. At that young age one is curious and eager to experiment, unmindful of the consequences. They feel strong and unconquerable. Children from broken families are quick to turn to drugs for solace. A lot of teens, however, try drugs just to be cool and be accepted. It is the thing to do. They think it makes them look cool and happening and before long they get sucked in to it and its difficult for them to trace their steps back even if they want to.

Teens need to be in a loving environment that makes them feel loved and cherished. The only way to keep teens from going astray is to make sure they have good self esteem and to keep them busy with activities they like. A content and challenged mind is less likely to look for options to kill boredom than an empty mind.
