Stress

 

Stress refers to pressure or worries caused by the problems in person’s life. Individual cannot avoid stress. It is not possible to escape from it completely. Life is filled with challenges and tests. Different problems, time limits and difficulties of modern life have made stress so usual that it has become a part of life for many people. However, stress of lower level helps people to perform well under pressure. It can inspire them to do their best.

Stress is a normal response to events that make us feel in danger or upset the balance of our mind. When a risk is observed, our nervous system responds by releasing stress hormones. These hormones prepare the body for emergency actions. As a result, our heart beats fast, muscles become tight, blood pressure increases and person feels breathlessness. These physical changes increase stamina, fastens our reaction time and improves focus. We become prepare to either fight or escape from the coming danger.

In emergencies, stress can save our life by giving us extra strength. Stress keeps us more active while presenting a work, improves our attentiveness and can even boost us to study more for the examination. However, beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and harms our health, temper, productivity, relations and quality of life.

Leading a long-term stressful life can leave us more vulnerable to nervousness and depression. Long-lasting stress disturbs every system in human body. It can overpower the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke and speed up the aging process. Problems related to sleep and digestion, obesity and skin conditions are some other health problems that are caused by stress.

The ability to bear stress differs from individual to individual. While some people seem to succeed on the excitement and challenge of a high-stress lifestyle, others fall at the slightest problem or frustration. The ability to bear stress depends on factors like person’s overall outlook of life and his emotional intelligence.

Stress can also be self-generated. It may occur due to mischievous children, problems in family life, being too busy, inability to accept uncertainty, lack of confidence, unrealistic hopes, etc. Stress affects the mind, body and behaviour in many ways. It is important to learn how to deal with stress when it becomes out of control.

Managing stress is easy if one learns to handle his thoughts, emotions, daily schedule, surroundings and the way he deals with the problems. Stress management involves changing the stressful situation when you can, changing your reaction when you cannot, taking care of yourself and making time for rest and relaxation.
