Maxim Gorky was a writer of the people in the real sense of the term. He had a first-hand knowledge of the sufferings of the common man and in his writings, we find the moving details of the cruelties and injustices to which the people of Russia were subjected in the pre-revolutionary days. Gorky longed to see the emancipation of the people from such a hard lot which emerged in the form of 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Gorky is one of the most discussed and translated authors of the Soviet Union. Mother is his most famous novel which has been translated into all the leading languages of the world.

Alexie Maximonich Peshkov Gorky was born in 1868 in Nighni, Novgorod. Gorky which in Russian means ‘the bitter one’ was his adopted name. He became an orphan in his early childhood and was brought up by his maternal grand father who was, as Gorky tells us, a cruel and miserly person. For his livelihood, he did a v ariety of hard jobs. Once, he worked at a shoe store also. Despite hard life, Gorky found time to read and became a compulsive reader. He then joined journalism for self-teaching. He toured through different places in Russia and saw by his own eyes the wretched condition of his countrymen. Gorky was now transformed into a revolutionary and joined the Communist Party. In 1905, he was arrested by the Czarist government and was exiled from the country. Even while leading an exiled life, Gorky remained involved in revolutionary activities. After the October Revolution of 1917, Lenin made him the head of the Propaganda Department.

Gorky was a literary genius who wrote novels, plays, stories and autobiographies of his earlier life of hardship. Besides Mother, his literary masterpiece, some other well known literary works of Gorky are Lower Depths and My childhood and Raminiscences.
