Haridass

Bhakta Haridass was born in a Muslim family at a remote village under Khulna District (now in Bangladesh) on 1450. His parent’s names are not known. About his childhood very little is known. At the age of. eighteen he came to Shantipur in Nadia Dist. (W.B.), the famous for Vaishnava-cult and met the great Vaishanava Acharya Sri Advaita. He was initiated by Sri Advaita and entered his school as a student and studied Sanskrit grammar and philosophical books — the Bhagavad Gita, Sreemad Bhagabatam etc.

Acharya gave him by the new name of Brahma Haridass. He initiated Haridass into Krihna cult — “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/Hare Rama. Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.” After diksha Haridass went to a remote forest near Benapole for deep meditation. Here he recited with devotion this Maha-Mantra three lakh times daily.

Then the Muslim Jamindar did not approve of Haridass’s devotion to Vaishnava-cult. He made use of prostitute named Heera and ordered her to pervert this Vaishnav saint by initiating him into the life of lust — wine and women. But strange are the -ways of Providence: the woman who was sent to corrupt Haridass was redeemed herself and saved from committing a great sin by Haridass, who converted her into Vaishnavism and she became Vaishnava sadhika. Many men and ‘women pursuing the evil path of life – that of wine and women were saved by Bhakta Haridass.

Haridass was travelled widely through cities and villages in accompany of his Guru Sri Advaita and singing all the time with devotional songs. Such was the impact of this act of Love and affection. People irrespect of caste, creed and religion became his followers and looked upon him as an incarnation of God. Then in 1486 Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born at Nabadwip and it became a famous place amongst the Vaisnavas.

Bhakta Haridass came forward, met Sri Chaitanya and became his staunch follower. In the Gita Lord Krishna says — “Whenever virtue subsides and irreligion prevails, I manifest myself from time to time for the protection of the good, for the destruction of the evil”. This was what happened exactly with the advent of Sri Chaitanya with his followers.

In sixteenth century, India made a great advancement in various fields of life and attained an enlightened position — and this was not in small Measure due to the presence of Sri Chaitanya, Bhakta Haridass, Prabhu Nityananda and others of Vaishnava –Cult and practice of Jnan and Bhakti-cult in literature.

In 1510 Sri Chaitanya travelled through South India with Bhakta Haridas and Prabhu Nityananda. The saying of Haridass — “All expansion is life, all contraction is death. All love is expansion, all selfishness is contraction. Therefore, Love for Love’s sake. Love to all, Love is the only Law of life”. Bhakta Haridass breathed his last in 1530 at Puri.
