Taps and Faucets

Water is a necessity of life and we cannot do without it, however the supply of purified water for human consumption or use is not unlimited thus we need to regulate it. This regulation is carried out with the help of a device called a Tap or Faucet. This device is fixed on to a water pipes and is made of a handle or knob at the top connected to a shaft, the lower end of which is spirally shaped like a screw. At the bottom of this shaft is a flat plate with a rubber or plastic ring on it, called the washer. Turning the handle or knob anti-clockwise lifts the plate upwards thus allowing the water to flow out of the pipe into the snout of the faucet, a clockwise turning reverses the process and the plate with the rubber ring is lowered thus blocking the path of the water. Taps and faucets can have rotating handles or levers but the basic principle remains the same, i.e. to cut-off or allow the flow of water.
