Desert Plants
Plants need water to survive but there are places where water is scanty, like in the deserts, yet plants are able to survive there since they use various means to do so. Most desert plants store water in their sterns and since most of them don’t have leaves, they do not lose water because of transpiration. However some species of desert plants do have leaves but since these leaves have a tough outer covering, they don’t lose water. Other desert plants like the Barrel Cactus take advantage of rainfall and become twice their size after a shower of rain by storing water inside their main stern. There are yet other desert plants which shed their leaves during dry weather thus conserving the water inside them. The roots of desert plants don’t go too deep below the surface, on the contrary they spread over a wider area. Another variety of desert plants have seeds which lie dormant till there is rain and then they germinate and bloom for a few days before withering away.
