A Pressure Cooker

1. A pressure cooker is a vessel. Food is cooked in it under the pressure of the steam.
2. Its body is made of thick aluminum alloy. It has a lid which fits tightly on it.
3. There is a rubber ring, known as the gasket, which is inserted inside the groove on the lid before the lid is placed to seal the pressure cooker for cooking.
4. In the centre of the lid is the safety vent which opens to the outside with the help of a small metal tube.
5. While cooking this vent is covered by a vent weight. Through this vent the excess steam escapes.
6. This is called the whistling of the pressure cooker. There is a safety valve beneath the handle of the cooker lid.
7. In case the safety vent is blocked, the safety valve melts.
8. This releases the steam thus preventing the pressure cooker from bursting.
9. Pressure cookers take only one-third of the total cooking time to cook food.
10. It is a blessing for a busy housewife. It also saves time and cooking gas.
