2nd October, 2002.

Dearest Julie,

You will be interested to hear, I am sure, that Mummy, Daddy and I hope to go to Tokyo, Japan, on the 25th October. You can imagine how excited I am already about it. I hope you have guessed the purpose of this letter: it is to ask, as you stay in Bombay, if you will come to see me off at the Santacruz Airport.

We intend to stay in Tokyo for a fortnight or so. We hope to spend a few days in Osaka, Kobe and Hiroshima. I am sure this ancient land of willow trees, chrysanthemums, kimonos, geishas, kabuk and Nob will delight and instruct me.

I have just gone through a travel book on Tokyo. I find that the city is the biggest one in the world. It is full of wonders! It is at once ancient and modern, Eastern and Western, materialistic and spiritual. The city has 102 universities, 34 newspapers and I find that almost everyone has a television set. Wow! That is something! Besides, Tokyo provides superb entertainment. Its theaters offer dances, Kabuki and Noh, as well as modern plays, striptease and puppet shows. Moreover, Tokyo is the Hollywood of Japan.

Oh! I am so excited. I have almost decided on the clothes for this wonderful trip. But I should like to discuss it all with you. Can you run over to Rajkot for a week? It won’t be much of a bother to take casual leave, I am sure.

Mummy and Daddy are as sweet as ever, of course, and they are as glad as I am that we have a fabulous trip.

With much love,

Your affectionate cousin,

Mary
