The Ganga River
Ganga is the most important of all rivers of India. She is about 2500 km long. She is held in high esteem by the Hindus who believe that she was brought by Bhagirathi from heavens. She rises from the Gangotri, flows through the Himalayas and entered the plains at Haridwar. When she reaches Allahabad, the Yamuna also joins her, so it is called ‘Sangam’ or Triveni, Then it flows to Bihar. From there she flows down to Bengal where she is known as the Bhagirathi. She merges herself at last into the Bay of Bengal and becomes one with the sea.
The Hindus believe that all sins can be washed away by taking a dip in its holy water. No other river has such a pure water as Ganga. A few drops of Ganga Jal are poured into the mouth of a dying person. The last wish of a Hindus is to die somewhere on her banks. They immerse the ashes of the dead into Ganga.
Ganga is loved the most by the people of India. India’s racial memories, the songs of triumph, her victories and defeats are interwoven round Ganga. “She is, therefore, considered as the symbol of India’s ancient culture and civilisation. Nehru has given her a personality of her own. She keeps on changing her moods. She smiles and dances in the morning sunlight. She looks dark, gloomy, and mysterious in the evening. In winter, she becomes a narrow, slow, and graceful stream while in the rainy reason, she is vast and roaring like sea. She has the power to destroy everything that comes in her way.”
Floods have become now an annual feature in the country. No one is spared their fury. The Ganga becomes furious and a terror to the people. Thousands of villages and cities, located on her bank, are swept away and ruined leading to great loss of life and property to the people. All human efforts fail to check the fury of the mighty Ganga.
All famous towns of India-Haridwar, Allahabad, Varanasi, and Patna-have become the places of pilgrimage since they are located on the banks of the Ganga. Kashi is another holy town. It has always been a famous seat of learning. The important fairs of India, “The Ganga Fair’ and the ‘Kumbh Fair’, are held on her banks.
The Ganga is very useful. She deposits alluvial soil in the plains and makes the soil rich and fertile. It is used for irrigation purposes. Canals with its tributaries have been dug to use its water for irrigation purposes. It is also used for transport purposes.
Sailing is done with boats and steamers where it has become sufficiently wide. Not only that, a few projects have been started for generating power. Thus, it has various advantages.
It is not only on account of mythology but also by virtues its various advantages that the Ganga occupies such an important place of in our national life.
