Every ancient tradition was similarly influenced by religion. Even in Europe, it is only during the last two or three centuries that the influence of Christianity has declined to a certain extent. To the extent that the religion of a particular people is among the first flowerings of a people’s individuality, it is almost tautologies to suggest that their culture was influenced by their religion. Since, culture, like the human body, is an organic whole, it would have been surprising if its different parts did not interact upon each other. If it could be shown that literature is influenced by religion, so could it be maintained that the expression of religious experience, if not the experience itself, is to a large extent determined by the peculiarities of the particular language chosen for it.

Furthermore, if the religion or spirituality is really the outstanding characteristic of the Indian tradition, one would expect it to persist in the face of all the twists and turns of its development. The teachings of the Upanishads form the bulk of the Vedantic teaching. Thus, the Bhakti movement, the Saiva and Tantric tradition, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism and other creeds constitute the most vital part of India philosophy. India’s culture rests on the ideal propounded by the various religious creeds that have claimed hundreds of millions followers in this country and abroad.

Much of literature was influenced by religion and it mainly depends upon the language in which it finds expression. Spirituality forms the bed-rock of Indian tradition. All the religions have enriched culture in India. They provide warp and woof to the Indian philosophy. Religion provides lofty idealism pursued by hundreds of millions all- over the world. In the ‘midst of turmoil’s, spirituality has subsisted the foundation stone.
