Schoolboys may have noted with amusement a recent finding by Dr. Gordon Ring of the Miami school of Medicine, Florida. Contrary to popular belief, he says, taking exercise does not tend to prolong life; it shortens it. So all these advocates of compulsory games have done their juvenile public no service. Indeed, whoever started the theory that exercise was beneficial, again contrary to popular belief, it was not Dr. Arnold of Rughby, who he thought about games at all, probably thought them a waste of time may really have started something.
Critical literature, from Alec Waugh onwards, had indeed suspected that there were fishy aspects of it. The public school (not the Vo Neumann) theory of games rested, it held, on two premises; firstly, that games consumed energies which might otherwise be devoted to annoying the staff; secondly, that if they were playing cricket or football one at least knew what the little horrors were up to. Yet, even if Dr. Ring is right and the latest theories, especially, Transatlantic, are not always immediately welcomed in master’s common – rooms — there may be other considerations. Taking too many baths is also probably dangerous: look what happened to the Romans. But a too enthusiastic endorsement of that view by small boys is not welcomed in either schools or homes.

Physical Exercise
An American doctor has found that physical exercise does not increase longevity but decreased it. If so, the champions of physical instruction have not done any good. True, for quite a time, Critics have been skeptical about its merits. Still, the novel thesis, even if true, is not acceptable, not only because it is a transatlantic thesis but also may be because of other reasons. Neither parents nor teachers like the boys welcoming this view.
