Natural Colours and Dyes
Materials Required:
- Old pieces of cloth
- Tea bags
- Cranberry juice
- Cherry juice
- Grape juice
- Four small margarine tubs
- Clothesline and spins
- Warm water
Dye is a colouring matter, used in clothes and paper. We can also obtain natural dyes from our environment.
Take four margarine tubs and pour some grape juice in one, cranberry juice in the other, cherry juice in the third and using some warm water, dip the tea bag in the fourth tub. Cut strips of cloth from an old bed sheet and dip one each in all the tubs.
Now taking the strips, dry them on a clothesline using a pin. Be careful not to stain your clothes. You can now use your coloured strips, while working on art and craft projects.
Can you think of other things in nature, which can be used as dyes?
You can test the same exercise, using purple berries or other plants in the neighbourhoods.
In some cultures, people use natural dyes to paint their faces.
