Science Project “Freezing the Gases” Complete School Projects on Air, Water, Weather and Temperature for Class 8, 9, 10 and 12 Students.

Freezing the Gases

Materials Required:

  1. Two identical cans of Soda
  2. Two large drinking glasses
  3. Use of freezer

Have you ever had a “flat” soda? A flat soda is one that has lost its fizz and does not bubble anymore. Bubbles are added to make the soda taste better. Carbon dioxide is the gas from which the bubbles arise. As long as the cap is screwed on the soda bottle tight, or the can is opened, the carbon dioxide stays inside the soda and keeps it tasting fizzy good.

What makes the soda go flat? Is it due to freezing and thawing it that causes the carbon dioxide gas to leave the soda and make it go flat? Put a can of soda in the freezer. Leave it there for only two hours, long enough for it to freeze (we don’t intend to really freeze the can of soda, as the water in the soda expands, when it freezes and could break the can open!) Do remember to take out the soda on time to avoid any mess.

Place the cold soda on a table, but not in sunlight. Place an identical can of soda, next to it. After four hours, open the two soda cans and pour each one into a large glass. Does one have more fizz and foam than the other?

Some people do not like a lot of fizz as the gas causes discomfort to them. Can you stir the gas out of a soda? Is there something you can put into the soda to get the gas out?

Did you ever drop or shake a can of soda before opening it? The soda shoots out quickly. After a can of soda is shaken, how long is the wait before it’s safe to open it, without the soda shooting out?
