It is an accepted fact that despite intensive efforts from the part of governments, there has been no decline in the number of road deaths. I agree to the point that poor condition of vehicles and roads and poor driving habits are the main culprits.

First of all, it can be noticed, especially in poor countries, that roads are badly constructed with unscientifically made turns and curves. Most of them are poorly maintained with gutters all around. Many roads are quite narrow and most often; there is no separate track for cyclists and pedestrians. Hence, cycling in such busy streets becomes death-trap for many. Adding to the woes, vehicles plying in these areas are not fit for use. Due to lack of stringent rules or regulations, the vehicles are not properly repaired and maintained.

The third contributing factor is driving habits. Many people smoke or use mobile phones while driving. Driving under the influence of alcohol, over speeding, driving long hours without break are some other common factors. In addition, people are reluctant to adopt safety measures like wearing seat belts and helmets. These factors increase the possibility of getting into accidents.

In total, it can be said that most of the road mishaps are the result of negligence and hence a little care from the part of authorities and drivers can save a lot of precious lives.
