What is Eastern music like?
Eastern music is completely different from the classical and popular music of Europe and America. It uses notes in another way, and the instruments are unlike those of the West. Another big difference is that most Eastern music is not written down, but made up as the player performs the music. Most Western music is written down and is played exactly the same way every time it is performed. But Eastern musicians like to be able to change their music to suit their feelings and the feeling of their listeners.
A piece of Eastern music is made up of the same scale of notes, often only five in each octave of the scale, whereas a piece of Western music usually changes its scales as it progresses. Eastern music is therefore often played on instruments where strings are plucked, and each string is tuned to a note of the scale.
