Track and Field Sports

Some of the greatest achievements have been produced in track and field sports, this is probably a major reason why sports fans are always interested in them. Track events generally take place on a track in a large stadium. Some events, like the Marathon race, may take place on a road. Track sports include running and walking events like sprinting, running, hurdles and walking. In running events runners use starting blocks which help them in powerfully and smoothly driving forward to gain momentum. In many races the runners start from different points on the track. The runner in the inner most track is far behind the runner in the outer most track. Since the circumference of the inner most track is much smaller than the circumference of the outer most track this ensures that all runners run the same distance to the finish line.

There are some races where hurdles are placed at equal distances along the track and the runners jump over them while running the race. The longer races are called Marathons and they are run over a distance of 42.2 kms. This race was named after the run made by a Greek soldier who ran the distance from Marathon to Athens in 490 BC to announce the Greek victory over the Persians. Field events are of various types like Shot Put, Javelin throw, Discus throw, Hammer throw, Long jump, High jump, Pole vault etc. In these events the competitors throw weights, discus or javelins or jump distances while competing with each other.

All these events require speed, stamina, determination and power. In most of these events the competitors wear shorts and vests, there are special shoes with spikes on their soles which are used by the athletes. For all the running events time keepers record the time in which the competitors won the races. In the throwing events the one who throws the farthest wins and in the jumping events the ones who jump the highest or farthest win.
