The Gaseous Planets
It is believed that all the planets were formed as a result of the combination of gases and clouds of dust about 4500 million years ago. Hydrogen is believed to have been found in the largest quantities in all planets, including the Sun. As time passed most of the smaller planets lost their reserves of hydrogen, largely because of their weak gravitational force. On the other hand most of the larger plants retained their gaseous composition because of a greater gravitational pull which did not allow the hydrogen and other gases to escape. As an example if we were to look at the larger planets we would find that about 90 percent of their structure is hydrogen. We know Neptune as a watery planet, which in reality is correct, because it has an outer layer of liquid hydrogen, an inner layer of metallic hydrogen, through which electric currents can pass and finally a rocky core.
