The Braille System
For quite some time there was no system of teaching the blind how the read, it was only in the year 1517 that as system of engraving letters on blocks was started so that blind persons could understand them by touching them. Subsequent to this various other systems wore also developed but they were not effective because though a blind person could read them, he could not write in that manner. In the year 1829 a blind called Louis Braille, who was himself a teacher for the blind, developed simple system made up of dots which could be felt and written by a blind person. This system was called the Braille system and is still used even today. The basis of the braille system is a rectangle comprising of six dots, sixty four different settings of these dots are possible, each different setting forms an alphabet or a punctuation mark for example a single embossed dot on the top left hand corner of the rectangle would stand for the alphabet ‘A’. These alphabet can also be written with the help of a pointed instrument.
