Motion Pictures
In the nineteenth century experiments were carried out to photograph a moving object with a series of separate cameras. In the late Nineteenth century the roll film was invented. This was followed by the development of cameras which were capable of photographing a series of images in action on a roll of film. When these were developed and rerun, they reproduced the same action. These pictures were first called ‘moving pictures’, then `motion pictures’ and then movies. In the year 1903, in the laboratories of Thomas Edison, the first motion picture which was based upon a story was produced, it was called `The Great Train Robbery’. After this there was no stopping the motion picture industry as it developed from black and white to Geva colour and then Eastman colour, and spread with better pictures and more theatres to show them. Today we have large air-conditioned auditoriums with stereophonic sound system where these motion pictures are shown in colour.
