Marsh Plants
Salt water is generally harmful for plants since it kills them, yet we have plants which survive in the salty water of the marshes. Marshes are formed out of the deposits along the river banks, as such this soil has a high salt content. Salt in the soil draws water out of the plants thus causing them to die for lack of nutrients. Marsh plants are able to counter the effect of salt in the soil because they have a high content of salt in their own cells. This allows them to take in salty water in the marshes and store it in their leaves and stems. Amongst these plants the Glass wort has the highest capability of tolerating salt and can survive even when it is fully submerged under high tide. Away from the banks of the water we can find marsh plants like Common marsh grass, Sea aster, Sea milk wort, Salt marsh rush etc.
