Hovercraft and Hydrofoils
The hovercraft is a unique vehicle capable of running both on land and water. The hovercraft generates an air cushion on it’s underside with the help of turbo electric engines. The operating principle is very simple, air is taken in and compressed, it is then pushed under the hovercraft. A skirt made of rubber surrounds the underside of the craft thus preventing the air from escaping from the sides. Even though the craft may weigh several tones when loaded, the air cushion helps it to slide on land or water thus making the ride very smooth. The air cushion is constantly maintained and the craft is propelled forward with the help of large propellers on top of the craft as shown in the diagram.
The hydrofoil is shaped more like a large high speed boat except that it has large wing like fins on it’s underside. As the hydro foil’s speed increases on water, it rises out of the water and slides along the surface with the help of it’s fins, it is capable of high speeds because water resistance to the hull is eliminated once it is moving on it’s fins. Propulsion to these crafts is provided with jet engines.
