Great Medical Discoveries 

ANATOMIST was Andreas Vesalius who taught in an Italian university and wrote the greatest ‘book in the history of science, it was called ‘De Corporis Humani Fabrica’ (On the Structure of the human Body).

BLOOD CIRCULATION WAS DISCOV-ERED BY an English doctor called William Harvey and the findings were published in 1628. PASTEURISATION WAS DISCOVERED BY a chemist called Louis Pasteur in 1866. His idea of heating perishables to kill germs was called pasteurisation. In 1885 he was able to find a cure for rabies.

X-RAYS WERE DISCOVERED BY a German physicist called Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE started the first school in London for training nurses and improving the standards of nursing. ANAESTHETICS WERE FIRST USED in surgery in 1842 when an American doctor called Crawford Long extracted a tumour. However Laughing gas had been tested for this purpose much earlier by Humphry Davy.

POLIO VACCINE was first success-fully produced by the American microbiolo-gist Jonas Salk in 1952. The vaccine so produced was unable to cause polio but was able to produce antibodies which prevented the occurrence of polio.

SIGMUND FREUD was an Austrian psychiatrist who founded the technique called psychoanalysis. With which he treated pa-tients with mental disorders.

HEART TRANSPLANT was first, suc-cessfully, carried out by Dr.Christiaan Barnard, a South African surgeon, on 3rd December 1967.
