Aqualung
Inability to breathe under water and increasing water pressure at greater depths were two major deterrents which prevented man from being able to explore the underwater world. In the earlier days cumbersome deep sea suits were used, these were connected to the ships overhead through hoses and air constantly had to be pumped in by seamen. It was only in the year 1943 that a Frenchman called Jacques Cousteau working with Emile Gagnan invented an apparatus called the ‘Aqualung’. With this equipment, cumbersome suits were no longer required and divers were also not connected to their ships with air intake pipes. Divers carried their air supply on their hacks in a metal cylinder which allowed them to breathe normally. These cylinders had automatic demand regulators which adjusted the air supply depending upon the water pressure.
