Nothing Succeeds Like Success
In history, as in life, it is success that counts. Start a political upheaval and let yourself be caught, and will be hanged as a traitor. But place yourself at the head of a rebellion and gain your point, and all future generations will worship you as the father of their country.
The world has always worshipped the rising sun. When Napoleon’s armies marched against the different countries of Europe and brought mighty emperors to their heels, the name of Napoleon reverberated throughout the continent. Every nook and corner of France re-echoed to the shouts of Viva Emperor (Long Live the Emperor!) But when the tide of fortune turned and Napoleon met his Waterloo, he was hated and execrated as a bloody hound. Even his own countrymen turned their backs on him and began to loop upon him as a curse, a scourge of God, the anti-Christ.
That was about two hundred years ago. About fifty years ago, another man repeated the performance of Napoleon. The steam-roller of Hitler, the dictator of Germany, rolled in all directions, broke all resistance and bulldozed the toughest opponents. The world came to loop upon him as the greatest strategist, the prince of warriors and the ace-commander. And then nature applied the reverse gear. Hitler was defeated in 1945 and there was then no greater villain. The adulators of yesterday turned his worst detractors. Bouquets changed into brickbats when success changed into failure. That is the way of the world. It is but a painful fact that thousands of our countrymen doubted the capacity of our late Prime Minister Shastriji to deliver the goods. Instances were not wanting when there were jeers and giggles when he appeared on the screen in a cinema hall. But when the Little Man showed his mettle by leading the nation to victory against Pakistan, he became the darling of his countrymen.
