Introduction Operating Web-based Applications

An application that can be accessed via a web browser, over a network connection and uses HTTP, is called a web-based application. Since a web-based application is accessed over the Internet, it can be accessed by anyone from anywhere. Nowadays, web-based applications are used for reservation of tickets, bookings, for e-governance, for online shopping with the provision of making payments online, commonly, using credit cards, and also for learning using online tutorials, tests etc. The advantage to a user is that it allows access to the facilities via the Internet, online, from the comfort of their home, office, car etc.

The web-based online applications can be categorized into – applications that require online transactions involving money, and, applications those provide information and allow interaction via filling forms, post query, view information, send email or chatting. The online reservation system and online shopping and bill payments fall in the first category and e-governance and online tutorial and tests fall in the second category. In this chapter, we discuss both kinds of applications.
