Adversity is the Touchstone of Character
The strength of our character is determined by the manner in which we face adversity. If we face the numerous challenges in life boldly, without letting them overwhelm us, we shall be able to overcome them and to succeed in life. Moreover, as we face more adverse situations, we feel that our character is gaining in strength. Thus adversity, apart from testing our character, also helps improve it. But, if we lack self-confidence, or are unsure of our abilities, we shall have a tendency to run away from problems — a practice which will keep our character constantly weak.
