The Basant
India is a land of festivals. Some festivals are based on religions and some are related to seasons. The Basant is a festival that marks the change of season. This festival establishes Indians proximity to nature and their abundant respect for nature.
Winter fades away into nothingness and spring season knocks .at the door. Shivering biting cold of the winter loses its sharpness. Its teeth get blunted. Woolen clothes which we huddle on our body are cast away. Nature subdued by loads of snow once again comes out with all her gusto. She appears in the full bloom of her youth, beauty and vigour. Trees and plants stretch out their bodies. New, tiny, delicate and glossy leaves sprout on the trees. Greenery rubs her eyes and gets rid of any dust or dirt deposited on it. Flowers toss their heads in the cool breeze. Birds sing out of joy and enthrall the listeners. The cuckoo passionately calls her mate through her melodious voice. All the creatures on this earth turn a new lease of life. Fragrance intoxicates. Heart leaps up out of joy.
Man finds the best reason to welcome this beautiful change and celebrates this occasion with all enthusiasm. This day is celebrated as Basant Panchmi. Fairs are held. Feet start dancing rhythmically spontaneously. People of all ages Wear ‘Basanti’ headgears to welcome the advent of life in nature. In the Punjab this festival is celebrated with extra zeal and zest. People wear yellow clothes and have dip in the river water early in the morning. Sky is overcast with flying kites. Youngsters fight over the possession of defeated kites. Devotees throng temples and Gurudwaras. Alms are given to the poor.
