Benito Mussolini-Creator of Fascism

 

Benito Mussolini was an Italian politician, journalist and leader of the National Fascist Party. He ruled the country as Prime Minister from 1922 until his overthrowing in 1943. Until 1925, he ruled constitutionally but later he dropped democracy and set up a legal dictatorship.

Mussolini was born at Forli in Romagna. His father was a blacksmith and his mother was a teacher in a school. After he completed his education, he took journalism. Later he became high priest of socialism. In World War I, he joined the army and fought on the battlefield. He suffered wounds and came out at the end. He had great patriotism and wanted to fulfill his ambition. He was a born master of conspiracies.

In 1919, Mussolini formed a political party in Italy. It was named as Fascists. The members of this party were the owners of the property, industrialists, middle class people, ex-soldiers, professional men and the intellectuals. When Mussolini came to power, there was a disorder in different parts of Italy. Soon he succeeded in restoring law and order. He developed the concept of ‘Corporate State’ and established six corporations of employers who nominated the candidates for the Government. However, they were to be approved by Mussolini.

All the educational institutions were under the control of Mussolini. The syllabus was Fascist oriented. He appointed only Fascist teachers and professors in educational institutions. Nationwide trade, business and industries received great encouragement from Mussolini. He gave importance to the construction of railways and shipbuilding industries. Even banking and currency were controlled by him.

In 1929, Mussolini signed the Lateran Treaty with the Pope of Rome. It was decided that a new state of Vatican would be created within Rome. The Roman Pope was recognized as its independent ruler. This settlement of the Rome was recognized as an outstanding achievement of Mussolini. This rooted his dictatorship more firmly in Italy.

He ordered better arms and ammunitions for the forces. He believed that this would help him in increasing national glory. This made Italian army, navy and air force much stronger. Having done so, Mussolini started following the policy of naked aggression. He publically proclaimed; Italy must expand or parish.” Initially Italy did expand but later Mussolini captured the island of Corfu in Greece. He even conquered the port Fiume on the Adriatic Sea. In 1935, Ethiopia in Africa was also invaded by the Italian armies.

On 10th June 1940, Italy entered World War II. Italian forces received destruction at the hands of enemies. This brought end of Fascist dictatorship in Italy. Benito Mussolini was captured by anti-fascist Italians. He was shot dead. Thus, finally Mussolini reached his grave.
